A LONG WHILE later, locked and loaded for further pleasure that wasn’t going to happen, Cowboy dragged his ass out of Sully’s bed before his restraint snapped and went home to take an ice-cold shower. But even that didn’t take the edge off. He had to take things into his own hands to relieve the pressure, and he came to the sound of Sully’s sweet voice in his ear and the lingering taste of her on his tongue.

After his shower, he grabbed his hat and headed over to his parents’ house to break the news that would probably piss off his mother. He knocked on the door but was too anxious to wait for them to answer and walked in. His mother was sitting on his father’s lap in the living room. His father’s hand was up her shirt, and they were making out. “Jesus Christ.” He turned around. “Aren’t you too old for that?”

“You’d better hope not since you’re my kin,” his father said.

His mother laughed, and he heard her climbing off his father’s lap. “Oh, Cowboy. You’ve seen us kiss before.”

“I didn’t need to see Dad’s hand up your shirt.” He turned around and found both his parents standing by the couch.

“If you’d’ve given me ten more minutes, I’d’ve been going downtown.” Tiny laughed at his own joke.

“Jesus.” Cowboy glowered at him. “I can’t unhear that.”

That only made his father laugh harder.

“Tiny, you’re awful,” his mother teased. “Ignore your frisky father, honey. How’s Sully?”

“Nervous about meeting her family.”

“It’s going to be a trying day,” his mother said. “But hopefully it will be the start of a new beginning for her. How are you holding up?”

“I’m worried about her, but good otherwise. Although you and Dad might not be in a minute.”

His father’s brow furrowed. “Why is that?”

“Because I’ve got to tell you something.” He paced for a second, then met his parents’ eyes. “Sully and I got together last night.”

Anger rose in his mother’s eyes. “Cowboy. What were you thinking? You’ve just made this a hundred times harder for her.”

“She made a move on me. I told her she was going through a lot and I didn’t want her to confuse her feelings about me, and she said I was the only thing she wasn’t confused about.”

“Don’t act like you didn’t have a choice,” his mother fumed. “I can’t believe this. You should know better.”

“What do you want me to say? You’re damn right I had a choice. I tried to keep my feelings to myself, and I couldn’t. They run too deep.” He straightened his spine. “Go ahead and give me hell or call me a selfish prick, but it won’t keep me from being with her. This is where we are, and now that it’s on the table, just tell me where we go from here.”

“For starters, I can’t be Sully’s therapist anymore,” his mother said sharply. “That’s a conflict of interest.”

Cowboy’s stomach sank. Fuck. “I didn’t think about that.”

“Clearly,” she snapped. “But you should have.”

He gritted his teeth, meeting her steely gaze.
